Pretoria – Police were out in full force in Muckleneuk, Pretoria, after a gang of seven men opened fire at a guard during a botched house robbery on Tuesday.
The gang, who arrived in a silver Audi, had allegedly gained access to a property in Muckleneuk by breaking down the driveway’s gate, police spokesperson Hero Gumbu told News24.
“They were approached by the gardener and told him they were there to buy a car.”
When the man said they looked too young to be buying a car they pulled out firearms and started chasing him out of the driveway towards the road.
Gumbu said it was at that moment a patrolling ADT guard who saw the commotion stopped his car in front of the driveway.
“The gunmen opened fire at the guard, who got away, shooting his car at least 11 times,” he said.
According to the police report the men hijacked a Renault Clio and sped away from the scene.
Gumbu said police were called in and a helicopter deployed to look for the suspects.
“A neighbour had called police claiming there was someone in her house. It was discovered that one of the gunman had managed to gain access to the property while the others had escaped in the car.”
Gumbu said the man was arrested and it was discovered that the Audi was registered as stolen.
The remaining gunmen are still at large.
