Durban - KwaZulu-Natal DA leader Sizwe Mchunu's nephew was stabbed to death for his cellphone and wallet on Wednesday.
Mchunu said on Wednesday night that Cebo Ntombela, 23, and a colleague were approached by men in Pietermaritzburg.
He said his nephew was stabbed once, through his heart. He was rushed to hospital "where he was declared dead on arrival", Mchunu said.
Mchunu said his nephew’s colleague has been referred for counselling following the attack.
He said Ntombela was the son of his eldest sister who had died during the political violence in Pietermaritzburg in 1992.
“I dedicated my life towards giving him a brighter future,” he said.
“Little did I expect that within a year of him finding a job, he would be brutally murdered by thugs. Rest in peace my son,” Mchunu wrote on Facebook.
Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said a case of murder had been opened and no arrest had been made.
