Uncle shoots nephew by mistake

Dutywa - A man was arrested in Dutywa, near Butterworth, on Sunday after he allegedly shot dead his 18-year-old nephew by accident, Eastern Cape police said.

The 18-year-old, a matric pupil, knocked at the door of his uncle's house around 01:30, Captain Jackson Manatha said.

In the dark, the uncle, 33, opened the door and fired a shot from his licensed firearm, hitting the younger man in the chest.

When the light was switched on, the man discovered he had shot his nephew and rushed him to the Dutywa Health Centre. Nurses declared him dead on arrival.

The 33-year-old handed himself in to police. His gun would be sent for ballistic testing. He would face a charge of murder in the Dutywa Magistrate's Court on Monday.
