Westbury shooting accused denied bail

Johannesburg - A man accused of pointing a firearm in the shooting that left 3-year-old Luke Tibbetts dead was denied bail by the Newlands Magistrate's Court in Johannesburg on Monday.

"It is not in the interest of justice for the accused to be released on bail," Magistrate Elmarie Engelbrecht said.

Wearing a black jacket and jeans, Keenan Mokwena, 28, appeared in the dock just after 11:00. He looked down during most of the proceedings and occasionally glanced at local residents in the public gallery.

"If the accused is released on bail, there will be a public outcry," Engelbrecht said.

The matter was postponed to 3 September.

Mokwena was wounded during the shooting in Westbury, Johannesburg, on 2 August.

He and Tibbetts were travelling in the area in different cars when they were hit by stray bullets. Mokwena was shot in his right arm.

Tibbetts was critically wounded, placed on life support, and died in hospital on 8 August.

Lindray Khakhu, 24, was arrested and charged with shooting Tibbetts.

He appeared in the same court on Tuesday. The case against him was postponed to 29 August for a formal bail application.

He was arrested after witnesses identified him and reported the matter to the police.
