Police are investigating four murders and have opened an inquest docket after five members of the family of Montclair, Durban, including a magistrate, were found dead in their home on Wednesday.
"We do not know what really happened, that is why we have opened four counts of murder as well as [an] inquest for further investigation," police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane told the media outside the family's home.
Earlier, Zwane confirmed that a Durban magistrate, her court interpreter husband as well as their three children - aged between nine and 17 - were found dead in their home.
A pistol was also found at the scene.
Rescue Care paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said paramedics were alerted to a shooting at a residence in the area just after 15:00.
Officials are still on the scene.
