A 51-year-old cyclist was airlifted to hospital on Saturday morning, after being shot in a suspected robbery in Krugersdorp.
Police spokesperson, Captain Appel Ernst, said passersby apparently found the seriously injured man next to the road, near Letamo Estate in Kromdraai.
Three unknown men apparently robbed the cyclist of his bicycle and shot him in the back, she said.
Netcare 911 spokesperson, Shawn Herbst, said paramedics had responded to reports of a shooting and had found a man who had been shot multiple times in an apparent robbery, while cycling.
"The patient was treated on scene by an Advanced Life Support paramedic and, due to the nature of his injuries, the Netcare 2 air ambulance was called to airlift the patient to a specialised medical facility," he said.
Police were investigating a case of armed robbery.
