Durban Fees Must Fall activist to be sentenced in October

EFF student activist Bonginkosi Khanyile will know his fate in two months after he was convicted on public violence charges on Monday.

Khanyile, a Durban University of Technology student, appeared in the packed Durban Regional Court.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal Natasha Kara told News24 that Khanyile had been convicted of public violence, possession of a dangerous weapon and failing to comply with a police instruction.

He will be sentenced on October 16, she said.

"He remains out on bail," Kara added.

Last month, a 40-minute police video that allegedly implicated Khanyile in acts of violence against police on the day of his arrest on September 27, 2016, was screened in court.

Warrant Officer Shaun Robins, a videographer for the police who works at the public order policing division in Mariannhill, allegedly captured Khanyile and his cohorts hurling stones and bricks at police.

In the video, Khanyile could be seen using a slingshot to aim stones at police outside the Durban University of Technology, ML Sultan Campus.

Robins testified that a maximum of just 20 police officers were at the scene on the day.

Khanyile's trial took two years to get underway after several postponements.
