Police say they are closely monitoring the situation on Alpine Road in Springfield, Durban, following a violent protest on Friday morning over housing and basic service delivery in the area.
The protesters from the nearby informal settlement had earlier blockaded roads with burning tyres and rubble, and threw stones at passing vehicles.
eThekwini metro police spokesperson Senior Superintended Parboo Sewpersad told News24 that the road had been cleared of rubble and had been opened.

"But motorists should be extremely cautious when approaching the area, especially on Henry and Umgeni roads.
"We are monitoring the situation very closely because we can't say when the protest might flare up again or when the protesters might decide to throw something at passing motorists," he said.
The protest began at around 06:00 when a group of about 50 people barricaded Alpine Road, according to police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele.
"The situation is calm at the moment and members of the community are currently in a meeting with the ward councillor. Public order policing [officers] are at the scene to monitor the situation," said Mbhele.
