Durban weekend accidents claim two lives, dozens injured

Durban - Two people have died in a collision, while in two other separate accidents involving taxis, dozens were left injured, Rescue Care paramedics said about the Durban incidents on Sunday.

''A fatal collision at the intersection of Alpine Road and Umgeni Road [on Saturday] night claimed the lives of two people and left several others injured,'' said operations managers Ceron Lennox and Garrith Jamieson.

He said paramedics found ''absolute carnage'' at the crash site with one vehicle on the road, but the other having landed in a canal.

Critical injuries

Two patients in the car in the canal had sustained serious injuries, including a 15-year-old boy. They were taken to hospital for further care.

In the car still on the road, one man was found dead and another injured.  There were also two women; one died later in hospital and the other sustained critical injuries.

Meanwhile, on Sunday morning, in Berea, 15 people were left injured after a taxi collided with two other vehicles.

In a separate incident, 24 people were injured after a taxi and car collided on the N3 highway near Sherwood.

At both accident scenes, those injured were stabilised before being taken to hospital.
