Fees Must Fall activist Bonginkosi Khanyile to be sentenced

Convicted Fees Must Fall activist Bonginkosi Khanyile will be sentenced by the Durban Regional Court on Tuesday.

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) student was found guilty on charges of public violence, possession of a dangerous weapon and failing to comply with police instruction.

In July, a 40-minute police video that allegedly implicated Khanyile in acts of violence against police on the day of his arrest, September 27, 2016, was screened in court.

Khanyile and his cohorts were captured hurling stones and bricks at police.

News24 previously reported that the video showed Khanyile using a slingshot to launch stones at police outside the DUT ML Sultan campus.

The trial took two years to get underway after several postponements.

He remains out on bail.
