Gumbi hoisted nursing flag - Denosa

Durban – Nurses' union Denosa on Wednesday paid tribute to Professor Rachel Vuyiswa Gumbi, who died of cancer on Christmas Day.

Gumbi, who was rector and vice-chancellor of the University of Zululand, "has hoisted the nursing flag very high in the academic fraternity", the Democratic Nursing Organisation of SA said in a statement.

She was 73. She was also chairperson of the Global Advisory Group on Nursing and Midwifery at the World Health Organisation.

"We are particularly proud that, as a nursing professor herself, she has produced a number of nurses and nursing academics in the institutions that she has taught and headed in the country throughout her career."

Denosa said it was honoured to have had her in their midst. Speaking in November 2012, Gumb had stressed the need for nursing leaders to gain a bird’s-eye view of the country's health problems, so they could help meet health targets.

"As she is laid to rest tomorrow, her family must lift their heads high as she has played her role of developing this country to the fullest. She was a leader par excellence."
