Heartfelt Arena in Thaba Tshwane, Pretoria has been damaged extensively after a broke out in the building.
Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson Johan Pieterse told News24 that the firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze quickly after it started at about 13:00 on Tuesday.
He said it appeared that the fire may have been caused by a welding machine inside the large hall of the building, where construction had taken place in preparation for a conference.
He added that the curtains and pressed wood in the arena caught fire, which caused the plumes of smoke that passers-by saw.
The roof and corrugated iron walls of the arena were also damaged.
No one was injured.
