Tokyo Sexwale is pained by South Africa today and says it’s not the one he
envisaged while imprisoned with Nelson Mandela.
"The situation we find ourselves in is bad. It's not the one I had in mind in the 15 years l spent with Madiba on Robben Island.
"I support the children who are fighting for better education. We must support the Fees Must Fall movement. This is something which was supposed to be sorted out a long time ago," the businessman said.
He mentioned the country's recent economic downgraded and blamed the ANC for letting its own people down. “It's a disgrace. Our economy was supposed to be growing at 6% not 0%. We’re not where we’re supposed to be."
Tokyo was talking to DRUM at the launch of the Mandela Remembrance Walk and Run. The 4th edition of the race will take place on 10 December and it marks the 4th year since Madiba’s death on 5 December 2013.
The mining tycoon said it was an important day for many South Africans.
"This day reflects on Mandela's tireless work. This year the event will include a 10km run in addition to the 5km walk.
“It's a gesture to runners as they have been neglected in the past. The symbolism behind the walk is our walk through life.”
“Let's walk together in honour of Madiba, for the peace and prosperity of our country and for the preservation of the values and principles of Nelson Mandela."
Sexwale said the ANC must make sure it doesn’t elect corrupt leaders as it has before. "A lifestyle audit needs to be done to each nominated candidate.
“We're supposed to be in a better space in terms of housing, health, education and economy."
Last year there were 15 000 participants at the walk, but they expect more this year due to the added 10km run.
The race starts and ends at the Union Buildings in Tshwane and proceeds will go to the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
