IPID preparing to make submission to Zondo commission

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is preparing a submission for the state capture commission of inquiry, it confirmed on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Moses Dlamini said IPID was one of the first victims of state capture.

"We were also the first ones to call it out," he said.

Dlamini said IPID had used the terms "quiet or silent coup" and "political gangsterism" to describe state capture.

Six witnesses have so far testified before chairperson of the judicial commission of inquiry into state capture Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.

On Thursday, Zondo is expected to deliver his decision on applications for leave to cross-examine witnesses.

This was after he expressed concerns over the Gupta brothers' applications from abroad to cross-examine witnesses.

Advocate Mike Hellens, SC, for Ajay Gupta, claimed that the brothers were worried about possibly being arrested if they returned to South Africa, labelling the Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority as "recklessly incompetent and a national embarrassment".

The public hearings will continue on Monday with the testimony of representatives of banks regarding the closure of Gupta-related accounts.
