Gordhan: How I dissed the Guptas

The former minister of finance was scathingly dismissive of the Guptas: he threw a fruit basket, that served as in invitation to the infamous Sun City wedding in the rubbish bin and a meeting with Ajay Gupta brokered by Zuma ended “after roughly two minutes” when it became clear he wasn’t interested.

Gordhan also offered the following as evidence of his disdain of the family:

** “I made not visits to the Saxonwold compound.”

** “Treasury cancelled The New Age post-budget breakfasts.”

** “I refused to take part in (then) Minister Zwane’s attempts to intervene in the banks’ decision to close the Gupta accounts.”

** “The court action lodged in the High Court to get a declaratory order about the powers if the finance minister in relation to banks.”

** “My, and Treasury’s, refusal to accede to the Denel Asia deal while we were pressured to do so.”

He added: “These are a few indicators of where I stood in relation to this issue (the Guptas).
