A man died after he was shot 25 times at close range on the Golden Highway in Johannesburg, the City's metro police department said on Friday.

The incident happened on Thursday afternoon while the man was travelling in his white Golf GTI, Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

"The driver was shot about 25 times at close range. He was travelling alone in the car," Minnaar said.

The motive for the incident is still unknown, but News24 understands that the shooting may be gang-related.
