Cape Town - A Khayelitsha mother accused of stabbing her baby in the neck has been referred to Valkenberg Hospital for observation.
Neliswa Aaron, 27, appeared in the Khayelitsha Magistrate's Court on Thursday on a charge of attempted murder following her arrest in De Doorns on Monday.
She evaded arrest for a week after her son was stabbed in her Makhaza home last Sunday.
Aaron, who made her first court appearance on Tuesday, was initially referred to a district surgeon for a psychological assessment.
The court on Thursday ruled that she be held at Valkenberg for observation and the matter was postponed to March 16.
Aaron's son was recovering in hospital. Social workers and hospital staff will decide on the further care of the little boy.
According to the police, the baby's grandparents had heard him crying early that morning and walked in on the stabbing.
They intervened and the woman fled the scene.
