Heavy traffic, rain and low visibility are taking a toll on motorists using the Van Reenen's Pass on the N3 toll route, which has been hit with three serious crashes.
Accident involving multiple vehicles have left at least 20 people injured, according to ER24.
"A teenaged female had to be extracted by the Municipal Fire Department while another patient had suffered critical head injuries – both required Advanced Life Support interventions. A father, mother and child from one vehicle luckily suffered only minor to moderate injuries," ER24 said about one accident.
N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) said emergency services attended to all the accident scenes, but cautioned that motorists who are making their way home from Easter holidays can expect delays.
"We appeal to road users to exercise extreme caution and patience under these peak traffic conditions," N3TC spokesperson Con Roux said.
The N3 toll route towards Gauteng was closed at the Tugela toll plaza in order for the accident scenes to be attended to.
Roux said there was two crashes on the southbound carriageway which also brought traffic to a standstill.
Travellers are advised to either postpone their journeys, or make use of the alternative routes via the N11/Newcastle or R74 Winterton/Bergville, Roux said.
