At least 3 dead, scores injured in Pretoria train crash

At least three people have been confirmed dead, while scores of others have been left injured following a train collision at Mountain View station, Pretoria on Tuesday morning.

"I can confirm that there is a train collision in Mountain View and a number of commuters are injured," Metrorail spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng said.

"Most unfortunately as a result of the collision and the impact, we had three fatalities from this accident and more than 300 people that were seen by emergency services,' Mofokeng told News24.

She said there are still people trapped under the train, and officials and emergency services are trying to reach them.

"Numerous passengers were found either in the trains or found walking around on the scene. Paramedics immediately set up a triage area to assess the patients," ER24's Russel Meiring said in a statement.

Best Care Ambulance services spokesperson Xander Loubser confirmed that one patient who was critically injured was airlifted to hospital.

Mofokeng said both trains had been travelling in the same direction and on the same track when the collision happened.

She said Metrorail was instituting an investigation into what happened.

Mofokeng added that there will be no train services between Mobapane and Pretoria and Garankuwa and Pretoria for the foreseeable future.
