Protests on Umgeni Road in Durban, apparently in response to the destruction of homes in an informal settlement, has left one person seriously injured. Traffic has also been halted.
Marshall Security spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said Public Order Police and eThekwini Metro Police fired rubber bullets and tear gas at the crowd.
He said the protest action was near a Shell petrol station on the M19, headed toward the city.
"Protesters are burning portable toilets and other items. A 35-year-old man sustained multiple injuries from rubber bullets. He was taken to Addington Hospital for immediate care with Crisis Medical."
Van Reenen urged motorists to use alternate routes.
Metro Police spokesperson Parboo Sewpersad said officers were in the process of dispersing the crowd.
"We are also going to remove the rubble on the road after fire services put out all blazes at the scene."
