Phoenix rising: Dog ready for new home after getting shot in gang crossfire

Cape Town – The local SPCA is looking for a new home for a dog that was shot in the head in April 2016 during gang violence in Blue Downs.

Phoenix, a two-year-old pit bull cross, recovered miraculously under the care of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA and is healthy enough to be adopted, Netwerk24 reported.

The organisation’s spokesperson, Belinda Abraham, said the bullet wasn’t removed from Phoenix’s head because that would have endangered his life.

"He has no more pain and he is a happy and energetic dog. Sometimes he has to lean against the wall for support because his balance was somewhat affected, but it makes him even more adorable," Abrahams says.

Tara McGovern from the SPCA said they would make sure Phoenix and his new owner were a good match.

"The new owner has to know pit bulls and has to love dogs. If the potential owner has other dogs, we’d have to first make sure they get along with Phoenix," she says.

She said, even though Phoenix was healthy, any potential new owner would have to keep in mind that he needed some extra attention.
