A protest over food parcels has erupted at Booysens informal settlement in Eloff Street, Johannesburg, according to Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Wayne Minnaar.
Residents say they have not received food parcels since the lockdown began and that they have survived by collecting food from a nearby dump site.
They have blocked off roads from the Eloff extension.
Ward councillor Mongameli Mnyameni, who has been accused of ignoring residents, says he can't interfere with the government's food distribution programme.
Mnyameni says councillors and politicians have been warned against participating in the distribution of food parcels.
Police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele says police will continue monitoring the situation.
