Police and emergency services were on the scene of a foiled cash-in-transit heist on the R34 in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday morning.
Police spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose said a G4S van was travelling on the R34 between Empangeni and Nkwalini when it was ambushed by a group of unknown suspects.
The alleged robbers were apparently travelling in Toyota Hilux bakkie.
"The group put poles in the road and tried to rob the van. Fortunately, police were around. A shoot-out took place and the suspects got away in their vehicle," Mdlalose said.
