Police foil another cash-in-transit heist following KZN gunfight

Police and emergency services were on the scene of a foiled cash-in-transit heist on the R34 in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday morning.

Police spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose said a G4S van was travelling on the R34 between Empangeni and Nkwalini when it was ambushed by a group of unknown suspects.

The alleged robbers were apparently travelling in Toyota Hilux bakkie.

"The group put poles in the road and tried to rob the van. Fortunately, police were around. A shoot-out took place and the suspects got away in their vehicle," Mdlalose said.

He said the security guards escaped the incident unharmed. One police officer was wounded during the shooting. No money was taken. The bakkie was later abandoned at Mthunzini.

No arrests had been made.

On Tuesday, a manhunt was launched for a gang of men who attacked an armoured vehicle near Nqutu in the northern area of KwaZulu-Natal.

Brigadier Vish Naidoo said the security vehicle with three occupants was transporting money from Dundee to Nquthu, when they were attacked by a group of unknown men who fired shots at the cash-in-transit vehicle, forcing the truck to leave the road.
