Mpumalanga – Accident reconstruction experts are currently at the scene of a crash that claimed 10 lives, including that of a three-year-old toddler, near Standerton, Mpumalanga, on Monday morning, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said.
A Toyota Avanza and a light delivery vehicle collided head-on on the R23, between Standerton and Balfour, said the RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane.
"RTMC will be working with the South African Police Services and Mpumalanga provincial authorities to investigate the accident that claimed 10 lives and left two other people seriously injured earlier today [Monday, September 4]," he said.
The two injured people, including the driver of the delivery vehicle, were rushed to hospital for medical attention.
Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety spokesperson Joseph Mabuza said the Avanza was coming from KwaZulu-Natal, towards Gauteng, when the collision occurred.
A case of culpable homicide was being investigated.
Zwane said the accident was another reminder to motorists to respect the rules of the road and to drive defensively at all times.
"Statistics indicate that South Africa experiences a high number of road fatalities on pay day weekends and over the long weekends," he said.
Five other people died over the weekend when a vehicle they were travelling in overturned in Limpopo, according to Zwane.
