Roads monitored in Vrygrond during land protest

Law enforcement officials are monitoring roads in Vrygrond, Cape Town after land-related protests flared up in the area for a second day on Tuesday. 

On Monday, protesters used burning tyres to block major roads, such as Prince George Drive and Military Road, as they demanded proper housing and land.

"The roads have been reopened, but we have staff monitoring the scene," City of Cape Town law enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason said. 

"There are already reports that people have started burning tyres inside Vrygrond."

During the course of Monday afternoon police said that there were "incidents of public violence".

"After 19:00, three motor vehicles were stoned and a liquor store, situated at Capricorn Square, [were] looted and damaged," police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said.

"Three cases of malicious damage to property were opened for the damaged vehicles and one case of public violence was registered, where two male suspects aged 16 and 34, both residents of Vrygrond, were arrested on the roof of a Spaza shop."

A case of business robbery and public violence was opened for the looting of a liquor store and a 27-year-old woman was arrested and detained.

Residents of Vrygrond in Cape Town are angry because they are being prevented from taking land.
