Two boys dead, mother injured after crash in heavy fog near Hopefield

A mother lost two sons in a horror crash in thick fog on the R45 in the Western Cape on Saturday morning.

Western Cape Traffic Chief, Kenny Africa, said the woman, who had been driving a Mitsubishi SUV, collided with a Hyundai light delivery vehicle on the R45, roughly 10km outside of Hopefield, around 08:40 on Saturday.

Africa said it was believed that the Hyundai had been making a u-turn in very misty conditions.

He said the two boys in the Mitsubishi, aged seven and 16, died in the crash, while the mother, who had been driving, was taken to a nearby hospital, her injuries unknown.

He said the two occupants in the Hyundai sustained minor injuries.

Africa said the R45 was closed while they cleared the road of debris.
