Two bystanders hit in shootout at Cape Town taxi rank

Two bystanders were shot and wounded when two groups of people opened fire on each other at the Bellville taxi rank on Friday, Western Cape police said.

Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut said the shootout occurred at 10:45. Two men, aged 28 and 33, were hit.

Officers deployed to the area spotted a group of men standing in Voortrekker Road and when they approached them, a man pulled out a gun, he said.

"He was shot and wounded by police. The group made an attempt to flee, but four of the five men were arrested in possession of an unlicensed firearm."

The men are expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
