Two suspects were shot and killed by police and a third arrested following a high speed chase in Kyalami, Midrand on Friday.
According to police, detectives investigating serious and violent crimes spotted a suspicious vehicle which failed to stop when they approached it.
"Suddenly a high speed chase and a shootout followed until the suspect's vehicle crashed into the boom gates of a complex," police spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said in a statement.
"During a shootout two suspects were fatally shot and another arrested. Police impounded a vehicle suspected to have been stolen at Pretoria Central."
Two unlicensed firearms with ammunition were seized.
No officers were hurt in the crossfire, Dlamini said.
Two inquest dockets have been registered for investigation. Charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and possession of a stolen vehicle are being investigated by police.
The arrested suspect is due to appear at the Alexandra Magistrate's Court on Monday.
