A video of a robbery that took place in Auckland Park has emerged on Facebook. In the video, which was posted by Intelligence Bureau SA on Tuesday, a number of cars can be seen backing away from the scene of a robbery where thieves had stopped a black vehicle and were apparently searching the car.

One of the robbers can be seen holding a large firearm and at one point a gunshot can be heard over the sound of cars hooting. Soon after the shot, cars travelling in the same lane start backing away to escape the scene.

According to the Facebook post, this incident occurred on Barry Hertzog Avenue in Auckland Park, Johannesburg.

Speaking to DRUM, Sergeant Bonginkosi Mdletshe of the Parkview Police Station explained how the robbery took place.

"A Chinese national who owns cellphone shops across town was robbed. As he was going around collecting money from his shops the suspects followed him from town and got hold of him [on Barry Hertzog Avenue].

"As seen in the footage, the suspects wanted to take as much money as they could by opening the back of the bakkie. They ran away with an undisclosed amount of money," he continued.

Mdletshe said the robbery took place at 16:35 on Tuesday and that no injuries were sustained.

He further urged the public to assist police by sending in more footage of the incident with the hopes they’d be able to identify the perpetrators.

"We’re requesting that people who have more footage – as the robbery was unfolding, people were taking videos – to send those videos in.

"We want to see the faces of the perpetrators and the car that was used [by them]. It would be wonderful if people would bring forth this information so that we can arrest these perpetrators."
