Mathew Bower (26), a Ballito event planner from Durban, not only captured the heart of his fiancée, Kendal McGlashan (21), recently but also the hearts of people who watched his beautiful proposal – which had more than 10 000 views – on Facebook!

Mathew went down on one knee on one of Lesotho’s freezing mountaintops and proposed to his girlfriend of three years.

The two lovebirds have known each other for years, Mathew having been friends with Kendal’s brother, Connor, since childhood.

After high school Kendal relocated to Cape Town but moved back to Durban a few months later to do to some modelling.

When she returned, her brother suggested they go out with his friends one evening and Mathew happened to be there.

It wasn’t long before their relationship blossomed.

“Normally your brother's friends can't date your younger sister so Mat and I had to keep our relationship hidden from my brother for five months,” Kendal said.

“Mat said he really liked me and wanted us to date in public,” she said. “I'm gonna ask your brother for permission, he told me.”

Connor said yes and the rest, as they say, is history.

Snow Report SA captured the romantic moment as a journalist from the weather reporting site met the couple just moments before Mathew popped the question.

The couple had planned to have a beach photoshoot, but when they learnt a cold front was approaching they opted for a hike in the mountains instead. Little did Kendal know Mathew had organised an engagement shoot with a photographer.

“It was minus five degrees and I’d planned this whole photoshoot,” Mat said.

“I’ve dreamt about this moment my entire life,” Kendal said. “Matt and I would talk about it all the time. I actually even made a joke at the top of the mountain. You’re gonna pop the question aren’t you, I said. Do you have something to ask me?”

But when he went down on one knee and asked for her hand in marriage, Kendal was taken by surprise.

“I was shocked. It was a dream come true”

“Thank God they [Snow Report SA] got that video. It was magical. I keep forgetting how I reacted at the moment,” she said.

The couple are due to tie the knot on 8 August 2020.

Asked why they chose this date, Kendal said: “Because we are so young and I’ve dreamt of that date because it’s a double infinity. The 8/8 and the 20/20 are double numbers. I just feel like it’s a lucky day.”
