Western Cape police seized 12 firearms and made a number of arrests during operations over the weekend targeting illegal firearms.
A 73-year-old was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm in Bishop Lavish, while an 18-year-old was apprehended in Philippi East for possession of an unlicensed firearm following information about a house robbery in the area.
In the Nyanga cluster eight different kinds of firearms were seized, including imitations of toy guns. Four suspects aged between 26 and 34 were also arrested in the area for possession of two illegal firearms, as well as 50 rounds of ammunition that was found in the car.
"Imitation/ replica toy firearms are utilised in the commission of serious crime incidents," Brigadier Novela Potelwa said in a statement.
Police in the Blue Downs clusters also managed to seize four firearms and arrested five suspects.
All the arrested suspects are expected to appear in various courts on Monday.
