Zuma fought for right to protest - MKMVA

Johannesburg - The thousands of South Africans who protested against President Jacob Zuma on Wednesday were exercising the democratic rights he fought for, the MKMVA said.

"This is the democracy President Jacob Zuma fought for," Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association chairperson Kebby Maphatsoe said as he arrived at a packed marquee in Kliptown, Soweto, to celebrate Zuma's 75th birthday.

African National Congress members sang and danced as they waited for Zuma to arrive.

Thousands of people took part in a "National Day of Action" to express their unhappiness about Zuma, following his large-scale Cabinet reshuffle on March 30.

He fired ministers including Pravin Gordhan and his deputy Mcebisi Jonas.

Ironically, Zuma shares his birthday with Gordhan, who turned 68 on Wednesday. Gordhan wished Zuma a happy birthday on Tuesday.
