EFF causing destruction and anarchy - ANC

Cape Town - The behaviour of the Economic Freedom Fighters' MPs in Parliament was a threat to the country's hard-won democracy, the ANC said on Friday.

"This is an act of rebels masked as parliamentarians who are committed to hijack our democracy, Parliament and legislatures," ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said.

"EFF is not in Parliament to resolve or to engage robustly to solve any problem but there to cause destruction and anarchy," he said.

On Thursday, EFF MPs disrupted proceedings while President Jacob Zuma was answering questions.

Tensions rose after party leader Julius Malema objected to Zuma's reply to a question about when he was going to repay part of the money spent on the R246m security upgrades to his private Nkandla homestead in KwaZulu-Natal.

National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete had ordered the red overall-clad MPs out earlier because they were "not serious" about proceedings.

But the MPs refused to leave, chanting and shouting slogans, forcing Mbete to adjourn proceedings.
