Pretoria - Traffic authorities are urging motorists to exercise caution on the road with traffic volumes expected to increase from 5 January, as holidaymakers start to making their way home.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) confirmed on Tuesday a total of 1 184 people were killed in 987 road accidents nationwide from 1 to 30 December.
Routes outlined as the busiest over the next few days are as follows, although RTMC spokesperson Thato Mosena said many accidents occurred on secondary routes which motorists travelled on to avoid toll fees and traffic officers.
- the M1 from Limpopo to Gauteng
- M1 from Free state to Gauteng
- N3 from Kwazulu-Natal to Gauteng
- N4 from Mpumalanga to Gauteng
- N2 from Kwazulu-Natal to Eastern Cape
- N2 from Eastern Cape to Western Cape.
“We are once again calling on motorists to exercise caution when using these busy routes, our law enforcement agencies will be out in full force to monitor and stop vehicles,” said Mosena.
The road accidents figures, released on Tuesday, were based on road fatalities reported by the police. KwaZulu-Natal had the most recorded accidents, 205, followed by Gauteng with 156 and the Eastern Cape with 136.

The route with the most recorded fatalities, 14, for December was the N12 between Klerksdorp and Wolmaransstad, North West. This was followed by nine deaths on the N11 between Middelburg and Groblersdal in Limpopo, and seven deaths on the N1 between Laingsburg and Cape Town in the Western Cape.
Motorists are being advised to look out for wet condition as well as tire bursts in extreme hot conditions.
