A cellphone store in Polokwane was left in the red on Wednesday after armed assailants stole tens of thousands in cash and merchandise.

Armed assailants stole tens of thousand of rands in cash and merchandise from a cellphone store in Polokwane.

On Wednesday just before 17:00 Aarif Anwer and his employees were held at gunpoint as they were closing the shop.

"We were loading goods onto the bakkie outside and the shop doors were open," Anwer, 46, told News24.

He said two of the men entered the shop demanding cash and cellphones. Another three men stayed outside and stole goods out of the bakkie.

The suspects made their getaway in a white Mercedes.

No injuries or fatalities were reported.

Anwer opened a case with Polokwane police.

The investigating officer assigned to the case, declined to comment. He said he was not yet "allowed to disclose any information" concerning the case.
