WATCH: Driver reverses R2m BMW over pond, hedge and into wall

Six seconds. That’s how long it took for one unfortunate driver to total this BMW i8. 

Video footage of the incident first surfaced on social media last week. A date stamp on the video suggests it happened on November 5, 2018. 

The footage shows the i8 reversing, gaining speed and then hitting a pot plant and a lamp pole, before crashing into a wall. The driver narrowly misses what is assumed to be her neighbour’s pond.  A woman emerges from the car, shoes in hand, with a look of total disbelief. 

She is comforted by several onlookers at the scene.

The Citizen on Monday reported that the vehicle in the video belonged to the Avis Car Rental in Kempton Park.

News24 contacted Avis, who released a statement via Ogilvy Public Relations. 

"The incident is currently under investigation and we unfortunately cannot give any further details at this time," the statement said. 

The 2018 BMW i8 Coupé retails for R2 095 200 and the i8 Roadster for R2 329 300. A second-hand model will still set you back upwards of R1m.
