The Department of Correctional Services is investigating an officer who appeared to be intoxicated in a video that went viral on social media.

In the video, the uniformed officer is asked about the whereabouts of his firearm, but he seems confused, even checking his pockets for the missing weapon. He is also unable to stand on one leg when asked to do so.

"I am fine for duty," the dozy officer responds after a man, seemingly a superior, questions his state.

The Department of Correctional Services said it was appalled by the officer's behaviour.

"The DCS (Department of Correctional Services) is aware of a video depicting a drunk official in DCS uniform circulating on social media. The department is deeply appalled and aggrieved by this video," said the department's spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo.

Nxumalo said the department had instituted an urgent investigation as the officer's conduct went against the service delivery charter.

"[The] service delivery charter clearly defines what is expected of a correctional official and how one ought to behave in the line of duty."
