Two people died and two others were injured in a massive fire in Hout Bay in Cape Town in the early hours of Friday, a City of Cape Town fire official said.

Desriee Fredericks' 15-year-old son was one of those who died in the morning blaze.

"He came in late. I did not know he was in his room because I thought he was sleeping at his nephew's place," she said.

As a form of respect, zinc sheets were used to cover the deceased until pathologists collected them.

According to the City of Cape Town, 30 wood and iron structures were destroyed by fire, leaving 90 people displaced.
