Police are hunting for three men who were caught on video attempting to hijack a woman at a petrol station in Ennerdale, Johannesburg on September 11.
The video footage of the incident has been widely circulated on social media.
"We can confirm that a case of hijacking has been opened and is under investigation," Captain Molefe Mokoena, Ennerdale police station spokesperson, told News24.
In the video, two armed men could be seen confronting the woman at the BP petrol station at roughly 18:30.
The assailants flanked her Honda CR-V and pointed their weapons at her, before opening both the driver and passenger doors and forcing her into the back of the vehicle.
They then drove off with her.
Mokoena said the woman was later dropped off in an abandoned area in Kliptown.
He said she wasn't physically assaulted beyond the scuffle that ensued when they pushed her into the back of the vehicle.
"Fortunately, the vehicle was later recovered because of the [tracking device] in the car," he said.
Mokoena said the victim's car was still in a good condition and nothing was missing from the vehicle.
