Police have arrested a taxi driver after video footage of a taxi driving on the wrong side of the road to avoid traffic in Bryanston went viral on Facebook.

Biker Sean Nysschen used his helmet camera to film the incident, forcing the taxi to turn around, and posted it on Facebook.

In the eight-minute video, Nysschen cuts the taxi off and deliberately prevents it from moving any further. He then repeatedly tells the driver to "move back".

Nysschen, who travels through Sloane Road in Bryanston on his way home from work, said the behaviour is something he encounters daily.

"It is literally months and months of seeing the same thing every day. This time I just got fed up and decided to block him from coming through."

He told News24 that the driver complained that his clutch was not working properly and that he needed to get to the top of the road.

"He kept saying: 'Smell the clutch baba, smell the clutch,' but I just would not let him through. He was putting other people's lives in danger."

Nysschen said he has sent "countless" videos of similar incidents to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) but the situation remained the same.

JMPD spokesperson Senior Superintendent Wayne Minnaar told News24 that the driver in question was arrested on Wednesday.

"Chief of Police David Tembe was horrified to see this video. We issued an instruction for our squad to trace the driver. Just before midday today, the driver was traced to Ivory Park in Midrand where he was arrested."

The driver was charged with reckless and negligent driving.

Nysschen was praised on social media and called a hero for intervening.
