Petrol price increases have been a thorn in the flesh of many South African motorists this year.

Both grades of petrol, 93 and 95 (ULP & LRP), increased by 26 cents and 23 cents a litre respectively on Wednesday, according to the department of energy’s recent announcement.

This has greatly affected private commuters, but it also affects public transport commuters who will see a rise in taxi and bus fares this month.

Commuter Njabulo Brown travels from Duduza, a township west of Nigel in Gauteng, via public transport every day.

Speaking to DRUM he said the money he spends on transport is already a lot.

“I spend almost R60 a day, it costs R300 a week. Per month I pay something like R1 200, which is too much,” Njabulo says.

The increment has also started conversation on social media, with many users tweeting #FuelPriceHike and other hashtags to voice their concerns and dismay.
