Israeli soldier dies after rocket attack

Jerusalem - An Israeli soldier injured by a rocket attack last week died of his wounds on Friday, the army said, raising to 65 the number of soldiers killed during a seven-week conflict with Hamas.

Netanel Maman, aged 21, was struck by the rocket in the southern city of Ashdod on 22 August, during the 50-day war between Israel and Hamas in and around the Gaza Strip.

The conflict also killed six civilians on the Israeli side, including a Thai worker and a four-year-old boy.

More than 2 100 Palestinians were killed in Israel's bombardment of the narrow coastal territory, nearly 70% of them civilians, according to the UN.

The war began on July 8 and ended with a ceasefire on Tuesday.
