After 20-year wait, refugee sees 'bright future' in UK

After two decades of living in a legal limbo on a British military base in Cyprus, Tag Bashir says he sees a "bright future" for his wife and three children after the UK government granted him and 30 fellow refugees permanent residency.

The 46-year-old Sudanese construction worker told The Associated Press on Tuesday that "anywhere in the UK is a better place" than the dilapidated, corrugated iron home he and his family have been living in at Dhekelia Garrison for years.

Bashir said the group never gave up on their goal to go to Britain. They landed at the military base in 1998, after their boat was abandoned by people smugglers.

The British government dropped its refusal to admit the refugees due to the "highly unusual circumstances".
