A man had died after chasing a thief that ran off with his phone.

Shakil Abdul Gaffar Shaikh (53) had boarded a train in Mumbai, India, with colleagues when a thief grabbed his phone and ran off just as the train was departing from the platform.

Shaikh jumped off the train to give chase, but the train's momentum caused him to lose his balance and he fell onto the tracks.

"We immediately rushed Shaikh to the hospital where he was declared dead," a railway official said.

The matter remains an ongoing investigation, but railway officials have "zeroed in on the suspect after examining CCTV footage of the platform and are looking for him", the official added.

"It's shocking that robbers are now emboldened enough to target passengers in trains and on platforms," said local activist Subhash Gupta.

He added that a police presence is a must at stations during all operational hours.
