A middle-aged Japanese man has been arrested for stealing over 70 pairs of shoes that he sniffed for "sexual pleasure".

Makoto Endo stole the shoes in Tochigi and Saitama, eastern Japan, because he enjoyed "sniffing the smell of well-worn shoes".

The 40-year-old is reportedly so turned on by smelly shoes, that he didn’t mind if they were men’s or women’s shoes.

Local media reports Endo is on trial for the multiple thefts after police found a large number of shoes at his home.

He reportedly has a fetish for footwear and got his kicks from the pungent odour of worn shoes.

Endo is believed to allegedly have stolen over 70 pairs of shoes worth about R37 200 between June 2017 and August 2018.

"I did it to get sexual pleasure by sniffing the ... well-worn shoes, regardless of their owners being men or women," Endo told police.

Cops arrested him in September last year after a large number of shoes were reported stolen. When searching his home, officers seized a large number of footwear.
