Heartbreaking photos of a dog licking its dead canine companion as the devoted pooch refused to leave her best friend’s side has captured the hearts of netizens.
The two dogs reportedly roamed the streets of Sieraków Slaski village in the Silesia province of southern Poland together.
One of the dogs, named Aza, reportedly belongs to an elderly resident but often escapes to wander around outside.
She seems to have taken on the other unnamed pooch as her companion.
Local resident Kamila Poloczek found the other dog dead in a field and called mayor Julian Werner to tell him Aza was guarding her dead companion.
In the pictures Aza can be seen licking the dead dog’s body and moves to affectionately lick her face.
“It was as if she wanted to say, ‘Get up, I think we have help, someone came for us,” Werner said.
The mayor says he tried to take the dead dog away, but Aza wouldn’t let him, so he brought some food and fed the mourning pooch.
“They also have feelings. Love, respect, don’t abandon them.”
Werner spent about an hour and a half with Aza before the other dog’s body was taken away in the afternoon.
Aza is said to have walked back to the village where she was put in a shelter before animal welfare inspectors heard from an elderly lady who said she was Aza’s owner.
Aza has now been safely returned home.
It’s unclear how the other dog died and whether she had an owner.
