John Wick is slaying it at the box office!

The third instalment of the action thriller franchise starring Keanu Reeves as the super-assassin has toppled the three-week reign of Avengers: Endgame in the US.

According to recently released figures, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum grossed an estimated $57 million (R798 million) in its opening weekend in North America, Daily Mail reports.

Endgame slipped to second place in its fourth weekend with $29,4 million (R411,6 million) while Pokémon Detective Pikachu nabbed third place with $24,8 million (R347,2 million) and A Dog's Journey opened in fourth with $8 million (R112 million).

John Wick 3 – which opened on 17 May in South Africa – sees Keanu starring opposite Oscar-winner Halle Berry, who plays new character Sofia, Coming Soon reports.

“John Wick is fighting for his life! He just wants his life back, which I think is good,” said Keanu in a recent interview. “He’s on the run and thinks Halle Berry’s character has some information for him. They have a past, and they get involved with The High Table, this kind of overlording entity.”

Angelica Huston, Asia Kate Dillon, and Jason Mantzoukas also co-star while Ian McShane, Common, Laurence Fishburne, Lance Reddick and Ruby Rose reprise their roles.

Meanwhile the world of John Wick is set to continue on the small screen with a spin-off TV series called The Continental in the works. Acclaimed writer and producer Chris Collins (Sons Of Anarchy, The Wire) will executive produce it.

A spin-off movie called Ballerina is also set to be coming soon, which follows a child assassin in the world of John Wick.
