Capetonian wows Simon Cowell's X Factor

Cape Town - One of the four members of the band Lakoda Rayne, who is a contestant on American reality series The X Factor USA, is originally from Cape Town.

Dani Knights, or rather Danielle van Zyl, 22, is originally from Durbanville and describes herself on Twitter as a "genuine boeremeisie" that likes to "walk barefoot whenever I can".

The group currently stands a chance to win a recording contract of around R41m.

Van Zyl moved to Minnesota in America 13 years ago when her father found work there.

Top nine

"I dream through this. It's hard work and little sleep," she wrote on Twitter on November 7.

Van Zyl also said South African groups such as Goldfish, Locnville and The Heuwels Fantasties are some of her favourites.

She has worked as a nanny and waiter, but was determined to be a singer and initially auditioned as a solo singer.

After the judges - which include Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger - put her through to the next round, the group was established. Van Zyl is the oldest member of the group, which also consists of Paige Elizabeth, 18, Hayley Orrantia, 17 and Cari Fletcher, 17. The group made it through to the top nine on Sunday.

The X Factor USA is broadcast on Saturdays at 18:00 and Sundays at 16:15 on M-Net.
