Board inspects The Spear

2012-05-21 14:06 Classifiers from the Film and Publication Board conducted an inspection of artist Brett Murray’s exhibition at the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg today.

Lawyers for the gallery told City Press that classifiers from the board arrived after 12pm to inspect Murray’s work, including The Spear that depicts President Jacob Zuma with his genitals hanging out.

The Film and Publication Board was established in 1996, replacing the Directorate of Publications who were the apartheid government’s censors.

Their mandate is to ascertain age restrictions for DVDs, computer games, and to investigate incidents of child pornography.

Board spokesperson Prince Ndamase said the classifiers were busy with a report and there was no indication yet as to whether the artwork would be classified as pornographic.

Ndamase said art was considered publication in terms of the Films and Publications Act.
