The North West department of public works and roads’ decision to temporarily close Nelson Mandela Drive for a week ahead of the annual Mahika Mahikeng festival has brought to light allegations that the department is rewarding poor performance by a contractor with additional work and increasing the project's costs from R47 million to R79 million.

The planned road closure means that revellers at the annual festival will have to find alternative routes during the busy weekend.
